Rest in peace, Benedict XVI
My old TLS piece on Giorgio Agamben & Benedict XVI, in which a young Joseph Ratzinger argues that the Church is a "bipartite body" (corpus bipartitum), at once "dark and beautiful" (fusca et decora), & is quoted as having said: "The Antichrist belongs to the Church."
“I Judge No One” in Unherd
The life and death of an impoverished Galilean rabbi are described in a number of non-Christian texts from the first centuries of our era. What do they make of him? & what should we? -- My first for Unherd, in London. Out today; read here.
New interview: “I Judge No One” on Times Radio, London
Despite some "flickers on the line" (his phrase), it was great to talk with Hugo Rifkind today on his Times Radio programme. He posed some big, thoughtful questions about my new Hurst book, I Judge No One: A Political Life of Jesus. Listen here (at 2.06.16 to 2.21.55).

Seminar course on Paul: Eötvös Loránd University, Winter 2023
I am very pleased to be returning to Eötvös Loránd University (the old University of Budapest) as visiting professor, next year, to teach "Mediterranean Wisdom in Christian Scripture" -- namely, 'pagan' lines quoted in the Pauline corpus & Acts of the Apostles. “Love of money is the root of all evils”, etc.
Derrida’s Europe: “An inalienable heritage”
"[The history of Europe] assigns to us an inalienable heritage. Granted, we can deny it, but all the same it remains undeniable, & continues to dictate to us a certain reading of the world." Jacques Derrida, flysheet for Donner la mort (1999)
Now in print: “I Judge No One” (Hurst, 2022)
A hard book to write - but not, I hope, to read. I Judge No One: A Political Life of Jesus is in print today. Hurst is giving 25 percent off with the code JUDGE25 at the book's webpage.
